We popped over to ABC kitchen for lunch yesterday. Good food, great atmosphere and Beautiful space. Then of course we popped in for a really quick walk through ABC Home. When in Rome, right?!

A lovely Sunday in NYC

Sunday we had a day off in NY since the building is closed so Seth and I decided to go play in the city. Started the day with this lovely view from our hotel window... you can see the Freedom Tower being built in the middle at the very back of the photo. Then we met my friend Jen and went to the Guggenheim to see the Maurizio Cattelan exhibit. Pretty dark and humorous stuff, totally interesting and I highly recommend it.

Then we went for a run/walk through Central Park where we got to make these GIANT bubbles...(the photo below is our demonstrator... the guy runnin the bubble show).

The morning of athletics was quickly ruined when we stopped for Pop Burger then headed to Brooklyn to wander around... including SmorgasBrewery at the Brooklyn Brewery in Williamsburg.

We rounded out the day with a pop into one of my faves Artists and Fleas (where we had an unexpected participation in the filming of the web documentary Failure Club). Then onto a lovely dinner at the Two Door Tavern with Jess.

2012... Day 3

It is Day 3 of 2012 and I am just starting to regroup a little bit. December was Crazytown busy, with a trip to the UK, home a couple days then to NC for Christmas and although I am now in Atlanta for work, I have had some time to flip through photos and relive and breath a little bit.

Here are just a few resolutions/goals I have for the year:

Unplug, especially to be with the people you are in the moment with. I am normally pretty good at this, but we always have room to grow, right?
To supplement the previous statement, meditate more... or be less of a Go-er every once in a while
Get our Wedding planned and set a date!! (Ben.... this one will be a joint effort. love you!)
Exercise more... even if it is just to get out to take a walk.
make more things... for fun.

So what are your resolutions? Any similar to mine?
oh, and... HAPPY NEW YEAR! Here's to hoping it is fabulous for all of us.

I started my quest with Hilary [inspired] with a jaunt over to the Dallas Flea on Saturday. Keepin it local, y'all. We had a blast talking to artists and collectors and merry handmakers. I was especially impressed with:

I was feeling so crafty and inspired that Sunday, I made a batch of sugar scrub found on Pinterest for my homegirls at work.
Since I was on a role, I went ahead and made washi tape gift tags for all my gifts to give them a lil handmade flair.

A Cape... makes me feel like a superhero

I ordered this really awesome cape from etsy shop FM908 for my upcoming trip to the UK. I got it right before Thanksgiving and I have worn it almost everyday since. It is warm, cute, fun and functional. And the coolest part? It is handmade!! You can go to the shop and pick out one of the capes that are in stock... or customize your own. Pretty rad. I can't wait to gallivant around London in this number.

Even if Ben calls me a Hobbit and not a superhero when I wear it. :)

The Thanksgiving holiday was restful, busy, inspirational and awesome. We went out to have our first Thanksgiving with Ben's family. That consisted of B catching a giant bass, me shooting (apparently I am a natural per Ben's Dad), and eating ALOT. We ended the night watching Bill Cunningham New York (after I saw Hilary's post on it... thanks for the suggestion!).

Then onto Friday where we had our second Thanksgiving at Joslyn's (we have a TON to be Thankful for).

Saturday morning B took me to see the Gaultier exhibit at the DMA which was pretty amazing. If you make it to Dallas, this is a must see!!
A quick bite at the Nammi Truck and then we went to see the Muppets!!
I have been singing Manah Manah for dayssssss. The Muppets were so good. And isn't that Eric Slager Muppet (at top) interpretation rad? You can buy it here.

Still recovering a little from jetlag, but lucky for me Thanksgiving is this week! So I will have some time to rest. I just wanted to briefly share a few of my favorite shots from Hong Kong. The one above was right outside our hotel and you could watch the colorful containers being brought in while you ate breakfast every morning.

This graveyard was an incredible vertical feast for the eyes.

The iconic Lion on the HK $$. On the backside are the bullet holes left by the Japanese.

Hong Kong: Night Squiggles & a Local Food Outing

Remember THIS post about B and I making Night Squggles? Well, I tried it out on the Hong Kong Skyline, and man there were waaaaay more colors. Sooo cool. Plus the HK tourism board puts on a light show with music and narration every night at 8 PM. Go to Harbor City for the best view.

For lunch today, our showroom manager Cliff took us to this authentic local HK eatery. She described it as a chinese food court... we thought it was more of a cafeteria. Let's put it this way, we were the only white people in there and HK is a pretty international melting pot. It was pretty good. I have no idea what i ate except that it was some kinda noodle dish.

Home Improvement: Starring the Davis crew!

My Dad (Robin), brother (Keynan) and Mom (Sharon) came into town last friday and man, when I rattle off the list that these fabulous home improvement mavens (my family!!) did, your jaw will drop. Are you ready??

Hung a chandelier over our dining table
Helped me hang the "together" pendant
Repaired BOTH umbrellas that the wind broke
Ripped out an unsightly (and unsuable) light post in the front yard and replaced it with an outdoor outlet on our carport
Added an outlet on the kitchen island
Cleaned our gutters
Organized 3 of our closets
BUILT TWO 6' outdoor tables
Cut down a tree and made it into a bench
Installed lighting in our garage

Jaw dropped yet?? So, what did I do to deserve this awesome treatment?!?!
I HAVE NO IDEA.
They are just that awesome and I can not tell you how grateful I am to them. :)

Every year there are a ton of good booths including: The ART booth with samples from all over the wholesale decorative accessory industry, A very cool booth with cowhides (where I got one of mine) and a million ideas for the upcoming Holiday season. I always do partial Christmas shopping at this sale.
Global Views is even setting up a booth with a ton of samples fresh off the truck from High Point!

Mod Monday- Mod Men Party

Happy Halloween!! I thought that it was only appropriate to post a themed party today, in case you are struggling for last minute ideas.
A few months ago, with the help from a few friends (thank you Gregg Lovell and Eric Bivins for your house and styling help and The Dallas Smoke group for your spot-on character cast) we put together a really fun Mod Men themed party for soon to debut online magazine DeerDallas. The lovely and very talented Rachael Laine (founder of DeerDallas) photographed the entire thing.

There was decade appropriate food, drinks, and music:: Cuba Libre, French 75 and Classic Martini for drinks. Meatballs, Cheese plate and crudites for food. Music, set your Pandora station to your favorite 60's or 50's group and let it play!

Color days: my market week in outfits

High Point Market wrapped up yesterday and man I am glad to be home!! For a week anyway. I thought it would be fun to do a recap in outfits. At GV we always have a color theme each day. It's not real strict but it helps distinguish the employees from the shoppers. Unless we are so on target with color that many people have in that color... Enter orange.

Farm Anatomy and How to skin a squirrel

My mom grew up on a farm. Although I know the proper way to skin a squirrel (per her description) there is a lot to learn about farm life.

Ben and my Mom did a pretty fun craft together yesterday. A wooden veneer light fixture spotted originally over on Poppytalk. I just sat back and watched the cooperation between these two. It was a great moment, given the first time my Mom met Ben 4 years ago, she said: "so Ben, what skills do you have to bring to the table?" It has been a running joke ever since. Needless to say, she cut him some slack and I love the lamp that they made!!

A dress... for my hat! and I need some opinions PLEASE!

I bought this super fun hat for a wedding that I am attending in Scotland in December. It is a Ryan Wilde piece that I scored in Brooklyn this summer. BUT... here is my dilemma, I have no dress to wear with the hat.

So friends, I have narrowed it down to a few choices and need some opinions. keep in mind, it will be Scotland in December... so I will most definitely have on tights and a wrap/sweater/shrug type deal. and maybe some boots or booties.

I am trying to keep in the theme of the feathers so green or black was my thought.

From left to right starting at the top: black wrap dress, green origami dress, black lady dress with cool neck, green heathered dress, black dolma sleeve dress, one shoulder green dress.

Also, I will probably buy this super badass gold gator claw from Georgia Varidakis (she is friends with Ryan and sold me the hat + she cast the necklace from the same gator claw that is INSIDE the feathers on my hat). so cool....

Wanna know what makes the hat EVEN cooler?! It was worn by Iman in VS. magazine (I apparently have it on backwards in my photo above).

Missoni Madness!!

This morning, I did wake up early for the Missoni at Target only to find their server must have crashed... And for the record, so not cool that as of 10 pm, it is still not up.
I headed out the door to arrive at 8 (when the store opened) to watch over 100 people walking into the store. EEk!!!
I had a couple things in my head that I was looking for, the pink cardigan and the shoes. I ended up with Waaaaay more than I should have gotten because the peer pressure to start grabbing stuff kicked in. I mean seriously guy in line in front of me that had NO idea what you were buying until you started to sort through it in line and then when you saw the tray I had you jumped out of line to go grab it?! I ended up returning the tray with a couple other things.
I do think I made out pretty well, and for just over $150 (I got a couple other things not pictured cause they are gifts). :)

My alarm tomorrow morning is set at 4 am... so i don't miss this::

Night Squiggles

Monday night B and I were driving home (I was driving) and I glanced over to notice that Ben was futzing with his camera. At a red light, he goes... Check this out. He showed me a couple photos that he had shot while we were moving. After a couple more, he asks if I wanna try... YEA!

We pull over and switch places, and proceed to drive the long way home for another 30 minutes. We took around 50 photos and narrowed them down. Here is the link to Ben's Flickr set where he tweaked the color and contrast a little.

Basically, he put it on bulb (lowest ISO setting) and we played around with the manual shutter speed until we got what we wanted. Fun adventure. Rad art. QT with my fiancé :) I'm in.

These four are my fave. We wanna print one kinda big for the house. Any preferences??

Wine, BBQ and I'm ENGAGED!!!!

Our most lovely and gracious friends Mark and Sandra invited us along on their Labor Day weekend trip to Wimberley. After a minor pet mess situation in the car and Blair witch situation after midnight looking for the rental house wen had a most Fabulous and memorable weekend. We set out for breakfast to Kate's Place where we then stumbled upon Market Days... Everyone was so confused when we told them we weren't in town for that. But whatever, onto the wine tasting!!

Over the course of two days we ate at 2 BBQ restaurants, went to 7 wineries and bought lots of local food to bring home.

But lets get to the exciting part... BEN asked me to marry him!!! I said yes. :) we were at the 2nd winery on Saturday, Driftwood checking out the amazing view and jammin on some lovely viognese and mozzarella. As I commented how awesome the day was and beautiful the weather was I looked over to B pulling a ring out of his pocket, getting down on his knee and asking me to be his wife. After much shock and literally asking "is this a joke?!" 8,000 times, I said "of course" and started crying. Mark got it all on film. :)

A weekend at the farm

A rejuvenating weekend at the farm in VA. Bonding with the girls on my mom's side, avoidance of Irene (we got a lil wind but no rain), a hike through the woods, some damn good crockpot mac and cheese, delicious Box wine (seriously), and to add even more delight.... a visit with my Dad, brothers and some old friends. Overall proved to be a nice time away... Aside from the chigger bites. But I've got a plan for that. :)

We installed our supercool tension light in the corner, the Daybed is in place, Chair sans cushion hangin out. All I need is for my print from Suzanne to come in (it will hang in that blank space), and maybe a cozy rug Like this one from Anthro to round out the space.

Chinese Dinner Party

If you are planning on doing a Chinese themed dinner party anytime soon, I suggest that if you are a novice, not to try soup dumplings on your first go. However, Scallion Pancakes are a real crowd pleaser. And Asian cucumbers are a sure bet as well.

For the Asian cucumbers:

3 peeled and sliced cucumbers
1 cup rice vinegar
4 tablespoons sesame oil
4 tablespoons Soy sauce
Combine and Soak for a few hours Serve!

We also decided to turn our Asian party into a pickling/canning party (cause that makes sense). And used this Fridge pickle recipe, preparing the jars and brine ahead of time. At the end of the party guests put together a jar of accoutrements and spices, tightened the jar and taDa! Easy fun party favor!! A lot of dill and garlic made ours DELICIOUS! Just finished snacking on one.

Thrifty Tweet-up version 2.0

On this edition of thrifty Tweet-up, we headed to Ft.Worth where Hilary showed us around.
First stop was BerryGoodBuys. I Loved how in the Berry Boutique, they had all the "good" stuff merchandised by color.
Then Christi, Sandra, Hilary and I headed over to the Lemon Tree. It was like dejavue, cause we had to track the lady that owned the place down. And although, there was no air-conditioning there was a treasure trove of stuff.... We spent a HUGE amount of time there. I'm not real sure how I made it outta there with only a necklace. Everyone else did pretty good though too.
If you plan on going, go soon because word on the street is that the Lemon Tree is closing soon.

We then escaped the heat for a yummy lunch at Joe t. Garcia's.
Fun outing ladies!!

I read the Hunger Games series last week, and it was sooooo good. And got even more excited when I read through the cast of the Hunger Games movie. Bravo casting team... I cant wait to see it. Lenny Kravitz as Cinna and Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss are exactly what I pictured.

I also just finished reading Bitter is the New Black by Jen Lancaster pretty hilarious.

Great trip in NYC!! Especially Williamsburg

I got back yesterday from a week long trip in NYC, and a fantastic one it was. I went for the NYIGF and our launch party for DwellStudio by GV. I ate tons of delicious food (my body thanked me for Gym trip today) and even got some fun free time to knock around Williamsburg (Brooklyn)... twice. Once for dinner then back on saturday for shopping and.... Eating (it was Smorgasbord after all!

With the advice of my friend Jess, Saturday was really fun having pastries and coffee at the smorgasbord. Then just wandering the streets.

This place was a goldmine.

I coulda bought the entire store... But I did pick up some Lavender simple syrup for cocktails

Cute merchandising at a cheese shop.

A serendipitous meeting with Joslyn and crazytown good food at Eataly kicked off the trip. and look! they are opening a marimekko store.

I went to Long Island one night to watch a movie by the river in a park with my friend Jen.

Another highlight of the trip was Cacio e Pepe. I can taste the most delicious pasta now... And yes he is mixing it in a big wheel of cheese. Mmmm

I bought a hat too but will do an entirely separate post for that one. ;)

Our picks for off the Strip Eats in Las Vegas #lvmkt

Going on 16 days a few of us are practically Las Vegas residents at this point. Needless to say, we have had a lot of time to try different restaurants. Here are some of our top picks:

Lotus of Siam- Thai food, and some if the best in the country we might add!! We found this one a coup,e years ago in the AmericanWay magazine. Definitely worth the trip!! Be sure to order the Thom Kha

Lindo Michoacan- Mexican food. If it is your birthday they give you a shot of tequila, but the find is why you should visit this off the strip spot

Orchids Garden- Sunday Dim Sum anyone? We thought so. This place is amazing. Our faves were the spinach shrimp dumplings and the dandelion greens.

Triple George- Grill and Steak house. This is fun and easy if you are headed downtown. Off 3rd street and Not in a casino, you will be pleased with the selection here. After you eat, go check out the Freemont St. Experience. Or for some local haunts, head to Don't Tell Mama for some AMAZING singing or The Griffin for a Hipster Harry Potter vibe.

The Arts Factory Bar + Bistro-Tapas, pizza, other eats. We LOVE this place. So much so That we have gone back 3 times. It is on the corner of Charleston and CasinoCenter. The food is sooo delicious, and fresh. Our favorites are: Sea boat scallops, Mac + cheese, Garlic Pollo and the Cuban Panini. Their tropical ice tea is a custom blend for them and super refreshing. The Arts Factory also has some pretty great galleries and events going in all the time, so be sure to check the event calendar out as well.

Mod Monday- a day late and in Vegas!!!

Last night (which was still Monday, I would like to point out), we took a mini adventure to Frankie's Tiki Room in Las Vegas for Happy Hour. If you are looking for a fun time, Off the Strip this place is pretty hooty and fun.
As you can see from the drink menu, it is pretty legit. I had the Lava Letch, but although it's a funny name the Bearded Clam was pretty rockin' (hold inappropriate comments please) ;)

I will do a post later this week on some other places in Vegas, because in 2 and a half weeks here I am starting to feel like a local.

Seth and I stopped for a drink in the Ellis Hotel bar tonight. And I am happy to report the most DeLICIoUS martini.
It is muddled Georgia Peaches, Tanqueray, champagne, agave nectar an a lil peach schnapps. Holy moley.... Amazing. They are putting it on their summer menu, so if you are in town you should definitely try one.

Almost finished hairpin daybed

You remember our DIY hairpin daybed for our guest room we pseudo finished a month ago? Well we haven't fully finished (still needs staining), but we got a mattress and put it in place for my mom to sleep in this week.

And see that awesome peek of an atomic tension rod lamp under the bed?! Similar to this one . It's blue and awesome and once we find a replacement spring, will go in the corner.

I have been watching marathons of Secrets From a Stylist and on the last one I saw, I spotted a Fiddle Fig in the corner. Normally I wouldn't notice this kind of thing but I have been seeing them pop up a ton of places lately. Including my bosses office, Joslyn's living room, and This month's RueMag.

Then I googled it.... To find that Emily Henderson had used it in her design star finale show, Jonathan Adler rocked a couple in his dining room and Other people love and blog about them too!!

Now I am on the look out for how to fit this fun indoor tree into our decor.

A reupholstery project

My mom is in town next week, and I am super excited for some QT. One of the things we are going to do while she is here, is reupholster a chair from my grandmother. My mom taught me how to upholster about 7 years ago and since then I have done a few smaller things, including this project on D*S

So, I was challenged to get the whole chair stripped, numbered, photographed and painted (I am allowed to paint this one albeit an heirloom) so Sharon can ride in and help me with the easy part. I literally stabbed myself with the screwdriver tonight trying to get the staples out.

And since I am documenting this photographically step by step, I will post a DIY guide when I am finished. :)

Tonight we were out at Lula B's East looking for an outfit for Ben for a themed party on Saturday (more on that later), when literally this gem jumped out at me. I loved the print, color and style first. Then I went to check out the price, when not only did I notice it was DVF, but it was my size AND $20.... Mine!! We did find an outfit for B too but if I show you, it will give away the party. ;)

Hello Denver

After a great weekend in Denver, I am ready to move to Colorado. Except for that pesky house we just bought. :)
Aside from the fun, beautiful wedding of our friends Eben and Rachel, Ben and I had so much fun taking downtown on foot (and bike, it was an awesome public bike system!!).

We arrived at 7 am on Friday morning by 8:30 am we were already checked in and trying to find something to do. So we found a local bagel shop got dome grub and headed out.

My favorite... Savory Spice Shop You must go there if in Denver. It is the most genius store. And they are all so nice and shipped our goods AND our books from the Tattered book store home.

Field Trip with Franki!

Last Friday I got to go on bit of a field trip with Mrs. Franki Durbin. And lemme tell ya y'all, I love her blog but I love her even more in person!
I took her to the Rock Barrel and Wood World. It had been a while since I had been there, but man can you get a deal?!

At Rock Barrel we had fun perusing all the bead, rock and fossil collections. I picked up a few things like some turquoise agate bookends. For a mere.... wait for it.... $25! are you kidding me?! Awesome.

Then we popped next door to Wood World. And man were my wheels a turnin'! Beautiful woods, veneers, slices and more. Anyone wanna go halfsies on the above beauty? We could make 2 BEAUTIFUL cutting boards with it.

Ben and I started a little DIY this weekend. A platform day bed with hairpin legs. We got a little direction from Todd Oldham's book, Handmade Modern. We are going to stain it to make it look a little more finished and I pick up the mattress tomorrow. This is just a sneak peak to the grand scheme change in the room.

It's been a crazy town week for me. I woke up this morning in a great mood. Back from a great trip in NY, no real big plans this weekend except to try and build a platform daybed (more on that later) and relax.
As we were getting ready to head out to work, CRASH!!!!
A kid (assumingly a kid), threw a rock through our window. RUDE!!
So, we called the glass people, police and neighborhood watch. Got it taken care of (except vindicating the culprit).
Now back to the happy good mood I was in. Have a great weekend!!!

My favorite thing about her post was her philosophy on sharing sources. It's genius and something that I believe as well. In fact, I just had this conversation with Sam the other day.

Here it is:

"A lot of people are secretive with their sources, but when it comes to mainly vintage the more business they do the more they can buy, its not like they will run out of vintage, they will just be able to turn over more, and charge less. And its a recession people. A lot of these stores have suffered, so the more you help them the better. Let's put good design in the hands of the people. It's like i want to be the Trader Joe's of design."

Mod Monday- a Derby inspired cocktail

Maybe because it's Monday you need this vintage 60's inspired cocktail to get through your week... OR you can file it away for this weekend, as your perfect accompaniment to your over-sized Derby hat.
Either way, here is a super delicious (I am biased cause I'm southern), Mint Julep recipe. Cheers!

1 scant ounce minted simple syrup
2 cups crushed ice
2 ounces bourbon (such as Woodford Reserve)
Fresh mint sprig, for garnish

To highball glass or silver Julep cup, add minted simple syrup, then 1 cup crushed ice, bourbon, and splash of water. Add enough of remaining ice to almost fill glass. Stir well and garnish with mint sprig.

I am officially obseesed. My friend Collette introduced me to Childish Gambino recently. And other than the fact that he is a halarious comedian, actor on one of my fave TV shows, was a writer for 30 Rock (are you kidding me?! awesome), and just well pretty good looking, his lyrics and rapping are damn catchy. Then I found his blog. F*ing beautiful stuff. I flipped through the back archives for like an hour last night.

Needless to say, I just bought my ticket to go see him next week @thePalladium, psyched.

I made this necklace a couple years ago with the intention of putting together a little shop with my friends on Etsy... needless to say, life got in the way.
However, I wore the necklace out over the weekend, and got an overwhelming number of compliments on it... leading me to believe that: yes, I should sell it.

Finished Fence- and a geeky but AWESOME photosynth

They finished our fence!! except for a couple small things that Ben talks about over on his Blog. That aside, it makes a world of difference. A huge difference in, curb appeal, privacy, backdrop out our fishbowl... really it is amazing! Mod Monday- South Beach Inspiration

Have you seen the new TRADHome yet?! If you have, then you have already seen the awesomeness of the Lords hotel in South Beach. It is bright and colorful and slightly kitschy with a bit of humor and class...... and it is the color scheme of our house. So, as I was going to scrap and save and get some groovy new wallpaper for our office/guest room, I am instead using Lord's as my inspiration.

SUPER WIDE YELLOW CABANA STRIPES... enter here. It's going to take a bit of math, and a super long level. But friends, since the fence is done(!!!!) I am on to my next challenge.

I bought some art last weekend that just got hung. I picked up the little Marfa watertower painting at the White Rock Local Market. It is by S H E D P R I N T S T U D I O. Then after our Thrift adventure wrapped up, Callie, Sandra and I went by the Belmont to Check out The Suite Art Fair. There were some pretty AWESOME things there. I walked away with a "Let the Sunshine in" print from We Are 1976.
That print, may or may not have spawned the inspiration for the yellow door. Just sayin...

Fence update and a Yellow Door

They started building down the opposite side of the house yesterday... I have a feeling they will be pretty close to finishing this weekend. But I am not going to hold my breath. The gate is built and they closed off the one side already. It is a SERIOUS game changer. I feel like the backyard is so much larger somehow. Now I am dreaming of ways to landscape... and scheming how to build a giant picnic table, and a bocci ball court (or bean bags). Whoa, I need to calm down.

On another note, we painted our door yellow (as seen above). Personally, I love it. And it will look even more awesome when we mount our floating numbers from Home Depot (thanks for all the tips!) on a matching yellow framed board. More on that later...

I don't think I did the tweet-up outing justice on my post from yesterday, but Tonia told us to keep the word "mum" on where she took us so the secret didn't get out. Yes, we met the Mayor. No, we did not believe Tonia when she said that this place was amazing. YES, it was SUPER fun and I can't wait to do it all over again.

Still deciding, but leaning towards "like" on my new Sally Hansen nail polish strips. One thing for sure.... They were SUPER easy to put on!! But they are pretty fun and festive for market.
